Of double driving days, and no bathing days.
1000 things that grind my gears November 13th, 2010A few days back, one of my friends sent me a link to check out. The gist of the link was to convince people to not drive their vehicle for 30th Jan 2011. And why?
Because “One day’s restraint cannot count all that much, you may say. In that case, you are wrong. Each minute step matters. And here, we are talking about a collective minute step. Let us breathe free on January 30. Let us help our earth breathe. Let us! “
Now while I couldn’t even begin ridiculing the intentions of the “No driving day” guy for almost three weeks, I have come out of shock and began thinking about it. I really tried hard to understand what good can be achieved by a group of people, 1000 or lesser, led by a random person on the internet to give up driving for a day (which, conveniently is a Sunday as well ). Why do people celebrate “earth hour” one hour once a year by switching off their lights? Why do people try to save tigers on the internet by blogging? Why do models go nude for PETA rather than wearing fur? (okay, that I understand)
We all know that the world today is suffering from a lot of problems, all this pollution in the air, the scarcity of energy, the sparsity of tigers and a thousand other things. Some people take these problems more seriously than others, and they know that if they propose any solution to the mass in which each individual will have to get out of their comfort zone, it is doomed to fail. So what do they do?
They just propose something which will make the followers feel that they are contributing to the cause, whereas they are just trivializing it and deluding themselves by going for a self righteous trip. They are just getting rid of their guilt of polluting the environment and congesting our roads very cheaply. Not driving on 30th Jan will not cause even 0.0001% change in overall traffic or pollution this month, this year, or ever. It won’t even make a statement. But participants will think that they have made an impact, while they’d have just made a fool of themselves. And they will gloat and laugh when they see you driving on 30th, and maybe even compel you to join them in this stupid crusade.
Proposal for my followers:
For not letting these people good about themselves, I propose my followers should drive twice on 30th Jan, simple. This way you can reverse the guilt and let them know that they have not done anything good for the environment. All their gloats are belong to us.
Proposal for “No driving day” followers:
Save some water as well guys, If you really want to feel good about yourself and help the environment, stop bathing 7 days a week and do it once a week. That way you will really have saved some water everyday. Too inconvenient?
In the words of George Carlin, “We’re so self-important. So self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. ‘Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.’ And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven’t learned how to care for one another, we’re gonna save the fucking planet?”

You say you really tried ‘hard’ to understand, but did you understand anything at all? Well, most of the efforts of most of the people go wasted because of most of the ‘cynics’ like you. Now that every tom, dick and harry can buy dot com of his own for less than Rs 500, he gets a space to yell out his frustration.
By the way, why should anybody follow ‘Anuj Rathi’ in the first place and not a ’cause’? Why is Anuj Rathi propagating against the one’s who take initiatives while he takes none? Doesn’t having a domain in your own name make you so obsessed about yourself?
Another point: Do you know about the emission level of your car? Or do you even know how and in what unit emission is measured?
Request: Please stop holding back and criticizing others when you yourself are not an ‘achiever’!

Well said Rai! There will always be some people with half or no knowledge about what they are talking, but now that they have a blogging space, they feel very important and rant anything whatsoever.
Mr Rathi, Imagine this: If 50 per cent of the vehicles in the city of Bengaluru stay off road for a day, the dark layers wrapping your brains will be gone.

No goodies for guessing why a web developer cannot thin of development of the world…

@Rai: Personal attacks aside, I would answer some of your questions.
Q: “Why is Anuj Rathi propagating against the one’s who take initiatives while he takes none?”
A:Because the initiative that you’re talking about, trivializes the seriousness of the issue.
Q: “Doesn’t having a domain in your own name make you so obsessed about yourself?”
A: Out of context, really.
Q: “Another point: Do you know about the emission level of your car? Or do you even know how and in what unit emission is measured?”
A: 1) I drive a bike 2) Yes
@Sudha: Nice try, but I don’t feed trolls.
Anyway, why is your IP same as Rai’s?

Great work keep it coming

@Rai : dude, do u think tht u r an achiever after putting a comment here ??? well at least spend ur 60 sec and read it again carefully “Not driving on 30th Jan will not cause even 0.0001% change in overall traffic or pollution this month, this year, or ever.”
Clear scientific fact, and even a moron can understand this… are u out of the box ?
Now if u know tht “how and in what unit emission is measured?” then u can understand tht yes , this a scientific fact and a statistical fact too..
Even Sudha agrees on this point if, we look at this in a more logical way as “Imagine this: If 50 per cent of the vehicles in the city of Bengaluru stay off road for a day.. ” , means still 50 % vehicles will be available to
wrap Sudha’s head with dark layers…
Think abt it

@Nilesh: The primary purpose of the day is to spread awareness (if you visited http://www.nodrivingday.com and read ‘why commit section, you’ll know) and hence we are all talking about it already — more than two months in advance — the purpose seems to be achieved in a scattered manner.
All of us, of course, actually want to bring about a change and I am sure this cannot happen by being cynical!
Well as far as the scientific facts are concerned, that you seem to understand better, you should know that if you hold your breath for a second the environment gets that extra ounce… it stays in the universe, a ‘simple logic’ as you say.

Geetanjali – The primary purpose of this post is not to be cynical.
With events like no-driving-day, people are taking their hands off important issues by contributing _nothing_, and still thinking that they have contributed.
It’s good to know that you are working towards betterment of environment. But with efforts like these, people whom you could mobilize to take their sundays off to plant a tree (or do anything worthwhile for the environment) will now be happy, sitting their asses off on sunday afternoon, doing nothing. And actually thinking that they contributed!
“if you hold your breath for a second the environment gets that extra ounce” – Loads of crap. If you commit suicide, the environment will have gained some kilograms, do it.

Ek aadmi pareshaan ghoom raha tha, to kisi ne poochha “kya baat hai bhai sahab?”
to woh kehta hai, “Sachin kehta hai pani bachao, Abhishek bachchan kehta hai ped bachao, TO DHOUN KISSE??!!”
